Unconventional Mom Workouts to Abolish Guilt

If you’re a mom and no matter what your deal is (working mom, stay at home mom, whatever mom), you’re busy. I can tell myself every day I’ll get up at 5AM and workout but it’s not going to happen. Not when I’m up until midnight doing crap. Not when the baby is waking me at 3AM because he’s teething. I can try all day to fit in a workout but the day flies and there is no time. I can attempt at night after the kids go to bed but let’s face it, that is wine and work time.

Luckily, I’ve invented my own unconventional workouts that can be included in everyday life. I like to think that each of these burns calories and provides me with the lack of guilt that I didn’t go for a jog or hit up the gym. If you need a quick go to workout, try one of mine! Guaranteed to make you sweat!

The Grease.
Put on the soundtrack of Grease and let her rip! I perform all the songs and dances from the movie and my kids love it at the same time they think I’m crazy. You do that hand jive fast enough, you can feel the burn! You’re the One That I Want and all those Sandy hip gyrations are more than enough to break a sweat. The best part of this workout is not only are you listening to fun music while entertaining your children, you can also multi-task! I do the dishes, pick up toys, and so much more while doing The Grease.

The Oopsie I Forgotsie.
I’m one of those planner people. Before I do anything, I plan my step after it. This is specifically my deal with the stairs. I never go up or down the stairs in my house without planning what needs to go up or down. My hands are never empty on the stairs. However, if I want to get some extra steps in, I will not bring everything at the same time. Time to fill up the diaper bag? I’ll run up and get diapers. Then I’ll go back up for the wipes. One more trip for the extra outfit. After three flights at top speed, I’m breaking a sweat. Yeah baby! Work it!

The Ooopsie I Forgotsie can be utilized any time you’re leaving the house as well. You’re in the car with the kids and all your gear and start backing out of the driveway. Wait! You forgot your cell phone. Sprint into the house. Sit back down and buckle up. Then, wait! You forgot your water! Two to three forgotten items provides a few opportunities for some prime sprints! Yay for multitasking!

The Target 20.
Need to get some supplies? Get your list ready, put on your kicks, and hit the store! Put 20 minutes on your phone timer, put the kids in the cart, and run like hell! See how fast you can make it through Target or whatever shop you’re in before your timer goes off. Pushing a cart with kids while maneuvering the aisle turns at top speeds makes, you feel amazingly high on life! Not only are you getting some cardio but you’re getting in and out of the store before the kids start to whine! For extra calorie burn, use the ginormous two-seater cart at Target. That beast really helps you maximize your workout while shopping.

The Jump Around.
One of my favorite all time songs, Jump Around by House of Pain. When this songs kicks off, my kids get huge smiles and are so excited! Not only do I love sharing classic hits from my youth but I love jumping to this song. Talk about cardio! The key is to jump around, jump around, jump up, jump up and get down - for the entire song. I do this while doing clean up, laundry, whatever really! Sometimes we play it just for fun. For extra calorie burn, play it twice in a row and wowsa!

The Red Light, Green Light.
This simple kids game is a great way to get in some exercise and play with your kids at the same time. Our kids really just want to play - all the time. So use this game to accomplish both. The key is to let them be in charge of the signals and get a good 20 minutes in. If you don’t know this game, it’s easy. Your child is on one end of the room or yard and you are on the other. They give you light colors and you head towards them based on the color.

Green light = run
Yellow light = walk
Red light = stop

We also added:
Black light = walk like a zombie
Blue light = swim

This is more difficult to play when you’re holding your other child. I usually have my 9 month son on my hip when I’m running back and forth. If you don’t have another baby to carry, try holding your cat or dog. Or anything to help add extra calorie burn!

The CLAM.
The CLAM = Cleaning Like A Madwoman. When your house needs to get clean each week, plan on doing it all in one go, as fast as you can. I usually vacuum, dust, and mop all in one go like a madwoman. I’m sweating like crazy when I’m done and my back is aching. But I have a clean house and can call off the need to workout the rest of the day! If you CLAM it once a week, that’s definitely considered a workout each week!

The LEGO.
If you have kids, you most likely have LEGOs at your house. And sometimes they are everywhere. The LEGO is easy - let your kids play with LEGOs and then just clean them up off the floor! Squat and pick up. Squat and pick up. The LEGO can be used for any toy clean up but doing this with small LEGO bits allows for many more squats and lots more thigh burn!

Try one of these unconventional workouts today and abolish that guilt that you're too busy to exercise! But mostly, have fun!

Keyboard Love

I'm a total klutz. I've talked about it often on here. So the husband introduced me to keyboard covers so I don't spill on my keyboard.

I ordered a pink one like this about 8 months ago and it started to wear. I just got this yellow one (below) to replace it for only $2.99 and I'm just in love with it. It makes me so happy to type!

And I get so many compliments on my keyboard cover. Go buy one!

31 Things I've Learned in 31 Years

(Well I started this in September 2012.   Just added a few more in October 2012.  Added a few more November 2012.  Adding more now January 2013. And finally finished March 2013.)

On my 32nd birthday, today, I have decided I must finish this post. Finally. Enjoy...

Over at one of my new favorite blogs, they are all doing this exercise and I really wanted to add my two cents... Let's see how long this takes me to write!

31 Things I've Learned in 31 Years

32 Things I've Learned in 32 Years
  1. Nothing ever turns out the way you planned. You can plan 100% of everything but get ready to be disappointed.
  2. Judge a book by it's cover, literally.  In the end, you'll be more surprised with the outcome because you didn't what it was about!
  3. There is no such thing as true love until you've become a mother.
  4. No matter what you're going through, always remember someone out there has it worse off.  It could be worse.
  5. Be grateful for the little things like running water, an abundance of food, shelter, and people in your life making things all the more easier.
  6. Marriage is hard!  You both have to work at it and it can't be one sided.
  7. No matter how many romantic comedies you watch or chick lit novels you read, your life will never be like that.  This one is hard to swallow ladies but if you think John Cusack will be outside your window some day with a boombox blasting Peter Gabriel, think again...
  8. When all else fails, have some chocolate.
  9. Nobody can get anywhere without rolling up their sleeves and committing to some hard work.
  10. Enjoy life in the now and don't say "I can't wait until..." because that moment will come all too fast and go by even faster.
  11. Take some me time, every day.  Even if it's only for 5 minutes!
  12. Be spontaneous.
  13. Don't get upset over the little things like spilled milk and broken glasses.  They are only things.
  14. Do stupid stuff every once in a while. It will be fun, I promise.
  15. Never, ever, ever change who you are for someone else.
  16. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel, even if you think your tunnel is never ending and too dark.
  17. They are your feelings and don't listen to someone if they say don't worry, or it's stupid.  Your feelings always count.
  18. Working from home rocks.  Seriously, it rocks.
  19. Age is just a number.  You're only as old as you feel.  And no matter how depressed you get for being older and growing up (well do we really ever grow up?) and life going by too fast, just remember it could be worse. You could be dead!
  20. If you have troubles, nothing can take them away better than reading a good book.  A little bit of fiction is a great escape!
  21. You will do some of the same things your parents did.  Try not to.  I dare you! (Trust me. I never thought in a million years I'd be saying, "That's right on a Saturday night!" like my dad always says.  Damn, I can't escape it!)
  22. True friends are hard to fine.  And friendship is a two way thing.  One person can't do all the work.
  23. Playing with a child and using your imagination is so amazingly rewarding.  We must all do this more often.
  24. Don't stress about weather! You can't control it.  So what if it's torrential down pour on your wedding day.  So what if there is a hurricane and it cancels your event.  There is nothing you can do and stressing just makes it worse! (Okay so I need to listen to this myself...)
  25. Food is awesome so don't limit yourself because of calories!
  26. Family is just that, family; no matter what.
  27. A good cry is necessary every once in a while. Try it while sitting on the bathroom floor or in an empty tub for superior results.
  28. Sing loud and often wherever you are. Singing is so gratifying even if you have a terrible voice.
  29. Being nice all the time is not all it's cracked up to be. People will walk all over you and take advantage of you. Sometimes people suck ass.
  30. Close your eyes when you're listening to good music. It will sound even better and it's invigorating.
  31. The beach is more fun and calming in the winter so grab you hat, gloves, and coat and take a walk by the waves during a snowfall.
  32. Smile. Really, smile. So many people have blank faces or frowns all day long. Having a smile on your face puts you in a good mood and will make others happier around you... If you just smile...

I can't believe how long this post took me to write.

Why I can't drive with my daughter anymore

1/4 of our media closet
I love my daughter more than anything in this world. And I've strived, as a mother, to make she has what she needs, is growing up well-educated, and has good taste in music.

See, music is the cornerstone of my marriage. We fell in love because of music and have spent most of our marriage being together with music all around us. From the moment Lyla was conceived she has been immersed in music; all music that constitute "good music" and by "good music" I don't mean anything of the country or metal genre.

Between Jared and I, our collection boasts more than 4,300 albums and more than 100 vinyls. You can come to our house and ask for a song, and we have it.  Many a night we've spent as a couple sitting on the couch and going through good tunes. I like to sit with my eyes closed and just feel the music. Music makes me happy.

For a little more background... Lyla is now 2 1/2 years old. Weezer was the founding music of her in utero. For some reason, Weezer was all I wanted to listen to when pregnant. So it's no surprise that Lyla can recognize Weezer and even sing Troublemaker when I'm not looking.

When she was a baby, we didn't play baby music around her, we played The Beatles, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, Maroon 5, and the list goes on. Some of the best memories we have of Lyla are of her bopping around to 80s dance music, singing/dancing to top 40, spinning to club music, grooving to Nicki, singing classical Christmas hits, in tune with great tunes, performing Broadway hits, making up her own song and dance, and singing Georgie.

Lyla loves music and I couldn't be happier.

But...

And you knew that but was coming...

Unfortunately, Lyla is too much like me. I am super picky with my music and so is my darling daughter. With the arrival of my new vehicle came XM radio and boy do I love it. I can listen to my jams on 90s on 9 all day long. However, the little one does not like my music. Ring a bell? Why yes. Growing up, my dad always played "the oldies" when we were in the car and I would complain. I would beg him to put on the top hits and not the oldies. Now karma is a bitch. I'm jamming to Snoop Dog and my daughter behind me says, "Can we listen to Maroon 5?"

It's my fault. I made her a music snob. She is not quiet at all about her taste in music. If there is a song on that she does not like, she tells me to put on Maroon 5 or to put on the "lalala" song, whatever that may be. And if she hears a song she likes, she yells: I LIKE this song. This is my new favorite song. I want to hear this and THEN we can listen to Maroon 5.

1/8 of our media closet
If I don't listen to her, it's WWIII in my car. True story. She cries, screams, yells, arms/legs flailing. God forbid I put on something my daughter doesn't want to listen to. It makes for an interesting car ride. Sometimes I dread it. And sometimes I'll go through every radio channel and all the XM channels like mad just to find Maroon 5 to shut her up. Now I could just put my Maroon 5 CD in the car but that would take away all the fun!

Lyla does love music; that is very true. But not only does she love it, she's very good with it. She can sing dozens of songs by heart and most days I can hear her singing song choruses - most recently it's Try by P!nk she's singing nonstop. When we're out shopping or somewhere and she hears a song, she'll yell: Mom, it's Train! Or she'll yell:  This song is from The Turtle movie!  Seriously. She can spot random songs that play for two minutes in a movie she's seen once. My husband has even been showing her piano and she has a lot of promise.

Will my little girl be the musician I never could be? Maybe. But for now, driving with my little music snob of a kid is difficult yet fun.

Roses, Goldfish, and Valentines!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Last night the husband came home with two dozen yellow roses.  Just beautiful.

Lyla's auntie made these Valentine cards for her friends at school.  So freaking cute! Thanks Auntie Jojo.

I asked Lyla who her Valentine was.  She said it's Gavin cause he's her best friend.  And so it begins...

We are the Dinosaurs!

I saw this and fell in love with it.  So I decided to make Lyla her own.  She loves listening to Laurie Berkner and marching to the dinosaur song and now every time she sees her dinosaur coat or hears the song, she must have both together.  Super cute!  I did hand sewing on the entire thing and found it very stress relieving.  I'm making a few more for some friend's kids and will probably make another size up for Lyla in a different color.  So easy and very fun!

Home and a Present!

I am home. Yay!  And I came home to my belated birthday present on my desk.

I had given Jared this link when I saw this on Etsy and told him to pick one out for me for my birthday. I loved the design and idea of it.  I figured he had forgotten about it since I sent so long ago.  But alas it looks beautiful on my neck.  And love that he picked this one.

Beach Bag

I'm looking for the perfect beach bag.  Any ideas?

Digging this one from Target

Totally adorable yet impractical on Amazon.

Also nice from Amazon but too small?

This has to act as my diaper bag, purse, and carry all of sorts as well for our cruise.  Help!

Pretty Nails

I saw this for the first time here.  Imagine getting beautifully painted nails without having to paint them or paying for the salon; nail stickers!  I thought it was not going to work. However curiosity got the best of me.  I was at Target one day and picked up a box for myself.  They sat in the closet for about a month.  Then at my hotel this week in NYC, the front desk lady definitely had nails done this way and it got me excited for my box at home.  I decided to figure it out and put them on.

I was shocked at how easy it really was and now nice they really came out.  They give you plenty of extra strips in case you mess up but I didn't have a problem.  I can honestly say I won't need to paint my nails anymore - not like I did before!  I always peeled the polish off as soon as I would paint them. So ladies, get your Sally Hansen nail strips for long lasting pretty nails.  They do work!

I decided to go with blue sparkles.  Took me a while to decide since there are so many but I love them!  And Lyla really doesn't know what to think of them!
