Beautiful White Mountains of NH

If you've never been to Mt. Washington Hotel, you have to go. If you've never been to the White Mountains of New Hampshire, take the trip. If you've never rode a steam train up a mountainside, start living and do it! If you've never eaten Thai food in the middle of nowhere NH, what are you waiting for? If' you've never seen the biggest candy counter in the world at Chutters, you don't know what you're missing.

These are a few of the things we encountered on our weekend away at Mt. Washington Hotel. We were supposed to have left on Thursday of last week at 4 or 5PM but work was too busy for us to get out early and the husband was procrastinating on packing. We had to stop for dinner and by the time we got out of EL, on to the road and into the woods of NH, we checked in around midnight.

The hotel is a classic, untouched beauty from history. You don't go there for modern, square sinks or glass showers. You go there knowing that famous dignitaries and athletes of the past escaped their worlds for rest and relaxation at this resort. The likes of Babe Ruth, many US Presidents and of course the International Monetary Conference of 1944 that brought in delegates from all over the world. As you step in the front doors, it's like stepping into that era and you feel you need ball gown on and white gloves.

All the bed rooms are different and they have high ceilings, floral decor and enormous windows. Each room has an incredible view of the mountains surrounding the area. The dining room was spectacular. After arriving late, we went straight to bed. I spent Friday morning meeting with my contact about an upcoming event I’m having there. In the afternoon we walked around and got acquainted with the resort. That evening we were to have dinner in the main dining room.

Having dinner in the main dining room is indeed something I’ve never encountered before in my entire life. Gentlemen had to wear jackets and ladies had to dress appropriately. There was a wine tasting dinner we were attending so beforehand there was a wine and cheese tasting in the conservatory. Jared had on his suit and tie and looked stunning. We felt so grown up walking around with our wine in the conservatory but we were not prepared at all for the main event.

As soon as we got to the dining room, we were lead with the group to a special room off the main room. The ceilings were at least 30’ high and the walls were painted pink and white with columns and flowers. We were seated with two older couples and the dinner began. In our company was a wine maker from France who talked about his wine. We were poured a glass and a plate was served of a scallop appetizer. We got talking with the couples and before we knew it the plate was removed, another wine glass was filled and the second course, a salad was served. This is pretty much how the night when on. We sat there while dozens of waiters delivered more wine to taste and delicious food to eat. We chatted about our businesses and our lives while we were all dressed up in this grand ballroom.

It was so bizarre. At one point, Jared whispered to me that he felt like he was in the movie, Titanic at dinner with the first class passengers. I couldn’t have agreed more. Of course, the further in the dinner progressed, the tipsier I became – I’m a lite-weight. When the dinner was finished, we sat at the bar and had an after dinner drink wondering what had just happened and if indeed it had happened. We had a marvelous time but it was just funny to have this kind of experience when we’re so young and used to eating out in our jeans in a restaurant let alone a ballroom that was also used for former presidents!

Saturday I was dying for one of two things: a sleigh ride or a train ride. Since the sleigh ride was for only 20 minutes and was $100, we went with the train ride. Glad we did too because it was SO fun!! We went on the steam train up Mt. Washington. When it first started we were a bit nervous because it was pretty shaking and the entire car was vibrating. Looking out the windows, it was such a steep fall so I was panicking of course. But obviously if the train could possible fall they would not let us go on it. It was end of winter but they still couldn’t let us go all the way to the top because of the snow but here are some great pictures of the trip. Jared even made some of them look old with the camera. Ain’t he just so talented?!

Saturday night we had dinner at the Bretton Arms Inn, which is also part of the resort. That meal was also fantastic. The Inn was so cozy and much more laid back. We had some really good food that entire weekend. I forgot to mention that after the train ride we had found a Thai restaurant for lunch. Go figure!

The great thing about Mt. Washington is the meals are included in your stay. You book a room and it can include breakfast and dinner. The dinner is a three-course ordeal. It’s really a great plan. We really enjoyed ourselves and saw some great scenery. We woke up on Sunday to a beautiful blanket of snow on the ground. I can’t wait to come back to the resort in August for my employee event.
