Dear Chocolate

Dear yummy, wholesomeness of heaven Chocolate,

I heart you.

I have been in love with you for 30 years (okay so maybe not exactly 30 years because I can't actually recall the first time I had some of you and it may have actually been in utero since I'm pretty sure my mom stocked up while pregnant).  So if you gather, it's been a while, this love addiction.

From chocolate milk to Hershey kisses to chocolate chip granola bars to peanut butter cups to chocolate cake to chocolate chip cookies to yummy ice cream to chocolate mousse to brownies and I could go on forever.  You are the reason any one reaches for dessert.  No one craves you more like I do.

In fact, I would never go an entire day without eating you in some way, shape, or form.  That is until Lent happened.  I gave you up for Lent because, let's face it, the only thing to give up for Lent is something you truly love. It has been almost a month now and I'm proud to say I've not given in at all.  We have been apart for a whole month!  Can you believe it! Do you miss me?  Well I missed you.  That's right, missed.

I feel healthy, I'm losing weight, and for the first time ever, I don't feel I need you to live.  I think my dependency on you has finally lost it's luster.  That said, I have decided we're going to part ways for good.  I'm not saying it's going to be easy and I'm sure every once in a while I'll sneak a bite or two of you in, but no longer am I going to be eating you every day in some way, shape, or form.  I have learned to get my fix from other things and I know I can keep it up if I try.

So this is no longer a love letter but a good bye letter.  Thanks for all the fun times we had together; in no particular order:

  1. Remember that one time an old friend and I went to the store and bought chocolate chip cookie dough and brought it to our high school basketball game and ate all of it while watching the game?
  2. Or that time when I lived in London and got hooked on Yorkie bars and maltesers?
  3. Or that time in Hawaii on our honeymoon when we went to the same restaurant two nights in a row to get that molten lava chocolate cake?
  4. Remember also all those half hot chocolate and half coffee beverages to get me through my work day?
  5. Or ever Easter when I would slam half a dozen Reese's peanut butter eggs?
  6. And of course remember when I was pregnant and had chocolate milk every day?
  7. Or girl scout cookie season and that always delectable thin mint cookie?
  8. Last but not least, remember all those hot fudge sundaes I've had just to make myself feel better?
Oh we've had some good times.  But I think it's time I move on.  I need to find a new love, a healthier love.  I need to take care of myself and teach my daughter that chocolate isn't always the answer to problems.

So farewell chocolate.  It's been nice knowing you and eating you.  I'll never forget the good times we've had and I wish you the best of luck fattening up other women.

My regards and love always,
Jessie the former chocoholic
