25 Days of Christmas Memories - Day 1

This year I've decided to write a special Christmas memory for the 25 days of Christmas. Each day until Christmas day, I will share a funny Christmas moment, memorable gift exchange, and my happy moments with family.  I hope you enjoy!

1st Day of Christmas

I can't remember how old I was but maybe I was ten or eleven.  I had gone to Bradlees (remember that store!) with my mom and saw this mint green and navy blue ten-speed bike.  I immediately fell in love.  The way the mint green handles swirled, the strips on the side, and of course the big girl feel.  I can see that bike still in my mind like it was yesterday.

I told my mom all I wanted for Christmas was that bike.  I didn't care if I got nothing else - just the bike was enough.  As I counted down the days to Christmas, all I could think of was that bike.  I could see myself riding down the sidewalk with all the other envious girls staring me down.  It was my ticket to freedom and to being a big girl.

Christmas finally arrived and I got up extra early on that day, as I usually did on Christmas morning.  I ran down the stairs expecting to see my bike at first sight.  My heart was crushed as soon as no bike was to be seen.

I sadly opened all my gifts with a heavy heart and when all was done, I was grateful for what I had gotten but I was just not as excited as I thought I'd be.  My dad got up to make us pancakes as he usually did and then my mom said as she was picking up wrapping paper that she thinks there may be one more for me in the garage.

I sprinted out the door as fast as I could.  There shining in my own imagined spotlight was my dream mint green and navy blue ten-speed bike with a big red bow on it.  The tag read, To Jessie, Love, Santa.  I was old enough to know that Santa didn't exist and this Santa had different handwriting than the Santa I had grown up with.  I was so ecstatic about my bike and brought it into the house to ride around as best I could.  I didn't ever want to leave its side all day.  I could not wait until it was warmer and there was no snow so I could drive it around the neighborhood.

I asked my mom who gave me the gift and she smiled and said Uncle Wayne - who of course was already my most favorite uncle around.  When he came over that day, I was so grateful to him and still to this day I'm grateful for being such a lucky kid able to get my dream bike.

I spent many years loving that bike.  I'm not sure what ever happened to it but I think my dad sold it in a tag sale years ago.  That had to be one my favorite Christmases of all time.
